Dear Parents/Guardians,
Student access to any time and any place learning options has expanded under a new law in Michigan. Section 21F of Public Act 60 of 2013 allows students in grades 6-12 to take up to two courses online per academic term (with parental consent). Michigan is the seventh state in the U.S. to enable statewide choice at the course level through online learning options.
Online learning holds great promise as an instructional approach to customize learning for students. However, it is substantially different from face-to-face instruction and usually works best when thoughtful planning supports individual enrollment decisions. You are encouraged to talk with your child to examine if online learning is a good fit for them.
To help you prepare for making the decision about whether your child has the characteristics to be successful learning online, we recommend you review the Parent Guide to Online Learning (the first link in the list to the right). The guide poses practical planning questions, provides a preparation checklist, offers advice for parents and includes an online learner readiness rubric. This guide will help you prepare for a conversation with your son or daughter about their online readiness.
After reviewing the Parent Guide, the next step is to complete an Interactive Online Learning Readiness Rubric (the second link in the list to the right) to assess your child's current readiness and what may/may not be needed to get them to a level of readiness in order to participate in online learning. Keep a copy of your rubric as you will be submitting this as part of the application.
Finally, students will need to complete both the Enrollment Request Form and the Learner Agreement (both linked to the right). Only electronic copies of all three forms will be accepted; please scan and email them to Mrs. Young at [email protected] prior to the August 10th (semester 1) or December 10th (semester 2) deadlines. Mrs. Young will confirm receipt of the documents and will begin the process for verification and approval/denial.
